Open-source licensing

Parts of the adapter's firmware are built on open-source code. Here's what that is, and where to get the source.

The link firmware (GPL-3.0)

The adapter talks to the Game Boy / Game Boy Advance link port using a build of GB-Link's GBLink-Firmware (which itself grew out of the Celio-Link project), licensed under the GNU General Public License v3.0.

We ship a small number of changes on top of GB-Link's own release — mainly a passthrough mode used by Save Vault, and a couple of link-timing fixes. Every change is listed in CHANGES.md inside the download below, so it's clear what GB-Link wrote and what we added.

In line with the GPL-3.0, we'll publish the exact source for the firmware build we ship here:

⬇ Firmware source (.tar.gz) — coming soon

Will include the full GPL-3.0 license text and our change log. Credit and thanks to the GB-Link and Celio-Link projects, whose work this firmware is built on.

The Switch trade firmware (AGPL-3.0)

The part of the adapter's firmware that trades with a Nintendo Switch over local wireless builds on protocol work from a few open-source projects, including tornadus/frlg-ldn-trade, decryptu/pokeldn and kinnay/LDN, all published under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 (or, for kinnay/LDN, GPL-3.0). Under the AGPL-3.0, we'll publish the corresponding source for the two firmware builds this covers:

⬇ Switch trade (FireRed, LeafGreen & Emerald) — coming soon
⬇ Switch trade — Ruby & Sapphire — coming soon

Will include the AGPL-3.0 license text. Nothing user-specific — keys, pairing data or any other secret material — is ever part of this source; that's handled separately and isn't something the licence requires us to publish.

Everything else

The Kizuna app, the online relay, and the rest of the adapter's firmware (including Save Vault, GBC Online and GBA Online) are our own work and are proprietary — not published as open source.
